Building on the world renowned work of Alex Osterwalder, this workshop will take the “Business Model Canvas” and apply the lens of social impact. In this session we’ll give a brief introduction into the business model canvas, why its useful, and the overall adoption of such a robust prototyping tool. We will then outline the new project being undertaken by Alex Osterwalder, Patrick Keenan, and Alan Smith, to apply the canvas to social business. In the session we will showcase a couple examples of social business within the Business Model Canvas, as well as areas for which the canvas does not account. There will be groups, there will be a competition, and ultimately a happy winner with a prize. All those who attend will leave with a new way to see business models, as well as questions about impact oriented businesses which can be carried online to the “Model Business” platform. Friday May 28th, 2010 13:00 – 14:00, CICG, Room 5
Online Applications Now Closed (Registration on a first come first serve basis)
Filmed over four years, GARBAGE DREAMS follows three teenage boys born into the trash trade and growing up in the world¹s largest garbage village, a ghetto located on the outskirts of Cairo. It is a world folded onto itself, an impenetrable labyrinth of narrow roadways camouflaged by trash; it is the home to 60,000 “Zabbaleen”, arabic for “Garbage people”. When their community is suddenly faced with the globalization of its trade, each of the teenage boys is forced to make choices that will impact his future and the survival of his community.
This workshop will examine The Spirit of Youth Association, featured in the film, and their work to offer the youth of the garbage village education and employment opportunities. We will also explore innovative on-the-ground strategies and online tools that have been developed for using this film to empower students and other citizens around the globe to learn about their local economy¹s relationship to the lives and livelihoods of its youth and families and get involved in creating new paths of opportunity for community development. The Calling is a groundbreaking documentary that explores faith through the eyes of young Americans who have decided to join the clergy. Sparked by religious inspiration, each of the subjects embarks on a unique journey of rigorous study and training. But it is their common determination to serve humanity that fuels their actions, solidifies their commitment and vaults each of them into positions of leadership within their respective faith communities. This workshop will examine how the film can be used to create new and critical connections across lines of faith and culture by highlighting common values and moving community members to take action through service. Translating & brokering profitable business solutions for sustainable social change & poverty alleviation – The case of Inclusive Business in Latin America This workshop explores the novel idea of bringing together large private companies and the poor in a mutually beneficial win-win relationship focused on profit generation. Inclusive business is a new development model which engages low-income communities across a company’s value chain – through direct employment; the development of suppliers, distributors and service providers from low-income communities; or through the innovative development and delivery of affordable goods and services that address unmet needs of low-income communities. Together with the participants of this workshop we explore the strengths, weaknesses and potential of this model for creating social change and poverty alleviation. The presentation is meant to foster a productive discussion on future strategies for convincing western companies of all sizes to care about social change and poverty alleviation in developing countries beyond peripheral CSR measures. Motion: That this House believes that social entrepreneurship is essential for development. Participate in an exciting and vibrant debate on this motion led by social entrepreneurs of the future from the International School of Geneva, La Grande Bossière. The debate, in British parliamentary style, encourages members of the audience to participate by making interventions or short speeches from the floor. If you have never debated, this is your chance to learn about the rules and format of debating while listening to the arguments on both sides of the motion, and testing your speaking skills. If you have debated in school or university, then you can sharpen those skills by speaking from the floor or bringing up points of information. At the very least, you can support the young debaters and vote – to use parliamentary parlance – on whether the motion is carried or not.
